New Song for Lady Dracula by POW! (aka Byron Blum)

Hey guys!

I'm really excited about this one. This is from San Francisco's POW! aka Byron Blum. This is a song about his cat IVY (pictured below). Enjoy!

POW! is playing at Death by Audio in Brooklyn next Thursday night as well with the band I am newly playing bass for, The Numerators (from Brooklyn via Lubbock, Texas), as well as Arches and White Laces. More information here: http://www.entertainment4every1.net/shows/

Doo Wop that Monster Bop

It's Hallllooowwwwweeeeeeen (season)!!

What are you all going to be? I am choosing between being one of Jem from the Holograms (see video below), the B-52s (because my thick hair can form a cool beehive), a spider, or a dinosaur. Here's a pretty sweet tutorial on making your own dino costume: http://www.pbs.org/parents/dinosaurtrain/costume/

For all those of you who aren't familiar with Jem and the Holograms, she's pretty awesome. Here's a snippet of her power:

And while I wait to be inspired to write some kid-friendly Halloween songs, I'm going to post some for you and your kids to listen to that I personally love. They are both on a great compilation called Doo Wop Halloween is a Scream:

B-52s: Butterbean

Man, the B-52s really got it down. Had them on repeat all day and got "Roam" and "Whammy Kiss" engrained in my brain, but "Butterbean" is a true Lady Dracula inspiration. I mean, I should have known, what with Kate Pierson and Fred Schneider from the band recording that Rocko's Modern Life Theme Song. And with this post I'm putting out an open call for people to send me some of their original punk songs for kids for the Lady Dracula Compilation. Let beehives and butterbeans be your guiding light.

Yeah, if you go down to Athens, G-A
And you're driving in your car
You won't get very far before
You hear people shoutin' out!
What's that?
Butterbean! Yeah!
Gramps and grannies
Kids in their teens
Junkyard dogs and campus queens
Yeah, everybody likes butterbeans

Don't you wait, don't you linger
Butterbean don't slip through my fingers

Pass me plate full, I'll be grateful
1-2-3-4
Pick 'em, hull 'em, put on the steam
That's how we fix butterbeans
(Fix 'em hot hot hot)
(Yeah, make 'em jump outta the pot)

Come here you little butterbean you come on!
Butterbean-butterbean
Butterbean-butterbean
Butterbean-butterbean
Butterbean-butterbean
Butterbean grows on the vine

Some people are fat, some people are lean
But I want you to show me the person
Who doesn't like butterbeans
Yay!

Well, you can have your yams
You can have your collard greens
But if you want to please little ol' me
You better fix butterbeans

Don't you wait, don't you linger
Butterbean don't slip through my fingers

Pick 'em, hull 'em, put on the steam
That's how we fix butterbeans
(Fix 'em hot hot hot)
(Yeah, make 'em jump outta the pot)
Fix 'em for me now

Pizza and Green Beans

Two new tracks! Another great Pizza tune is from Jonas in Nashville's Turbo Fruits! And a song about green beans by yours truly, Lady Dracula:

Syd Barrett - Effervescing Elephant

A great song to introduce your kids to the realm of acid and rock n'roll, without really going there. Syd Barrett has made some magic in this song, and by the time they're old enough they'll appreciate Pink Floyd for the right reasons.

An Effervescing Elephant
with tiny eyes and great big trunk
once whispered to the tiny ear
the ear of one inferior
that by next June he'd die, oh yeah!
because the tiger would roam.
The little one said: "Oh my goodness I must stay at home!"
and every time I hear a growl
I'll know the tiger's on the prowl
and I'll be really safe, you know
the elephant he told me so.
Everyone was nervy, oh yeah!
and the message was spread
to zebra, mongoose, and the dirty hippopotamus
who wallowed in the mud and chewed
his spicy hippo-plankton food
and tended to ignore the word
preferring to survey a herd
of stupid water bison, oh yeah!
And all the jungle took fright,
and ran around for all the day and the night
but all in vain, because, you see,
the tiger came and said: "Who me?!
You know, I wouldn't hurt not one of you.
I'd much prefer something to chew
and you're all to scant." oh yeah!
He ate the Elephant
